HTC Announces Ice Cream Sandwich Roll-Out Beginning March

HTC Announces Ice Cream Sandwich Roll-Out Beginning March

HTC has finally moved the needle forward with their plans for Ice Cream Sandwich updates to their phones, with the first wave starting to hit in March. HTC initially came out and said (like most manufacturers) that they were reviewing their line-up of devices and would make determinations of which handsets would be receiving Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Since this initial announcement there hasn’t been much movement, until today. HTC officially announced the first wave of devices that would be receiving the update to ICS (along with updated Sense) and that they will be receiving the update in March!

The List:

  • Rezound (Verizon)
  • Vivid (AT&T)
  • Amaze 4G (T-Mobile)
  • EVO 3D (Sprint
  • EVO Design 4G (Sprint)
  • Incredible S
  • Desire S
  • Desire HD

As you can see there is a pretty good group of devices there, unfortunately it’s not a lot of devices. HTC has been pushing out handsets at a very rapid rate (something they plan on correcting moving forward) so they can’t focus on all their handsets and have them all updated at the same time. Unfortunately that means a lot of people who have HTC phones, like Verizons first 4G phone the Thunderbolt, aren’t on the list for ICS updates. This doesn’t mean that they won’t be updated to ICS, it just means that in March you won’t be receiving it and you’ll h ave to wait for more information to come from HTC as to when you’ll be updated (if you’re going to be updated).

How do you feel about this? Do you think there should be more devices on this list? Do you think that you got ripped of?

HTC Announces Ice Cream Sandwich Update Roadmap

0
HTC Announces Ice Cream Sandwich Update Roadmap

HTC has been a bit vague on their plans for software updates to Ice Cream Sandwich for thief phone line-up until now. They have taken to thief Facebook page to shed some light on their plans to the delight (dismay) of their consumers. They have announced their initial list of phones that will be upgraded in “early 2012”. Unfortunately the list is very small and doesn’t include all of their top line devices that are currently available (i.e. HTC Thunderbolt). At this point the list is only 8 devices long and they’re continuing to assess what other devices will be upgraded. This is just one more concerning point within the Android ecosystem as the OS advances more and more hardware manufacturers are going to have devices that aren’t up to the latest gen of software. This effects users who have phones that are less than a year old and won’t be getting the latest versions of software which is unfortunate because Android keeps getting better and better.

“HTC knows how excited our fans are to get their hands on Google’s latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, so we’re thrilled today to announce the first wave of HTC phones that will receive upgrades: We can confirm the brand new HTC Vivid is upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich. In addition, Ice Cream Sandwich is coming in early 2012 to a variety of devices including the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL and HTC Sensation XE as well as the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and HTC Amaze 4G through close integration with our carrier partners. We’re continuing to assess our product portfolio, so stay tuned for more updates on device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Ice Cream Sandwich.”

So is your device on that list?

HTC Thunderbolt Receives Alpha Ice Cream Sandwich Port

Well this is good news for T-Bolt owners out there especially since Verizon and HTC have not made any effort to keep the Thunderbolt up to speed with Android OS updates. Jdkoreclipse was able to get the pre-alpha ROM up and booting, sadly everything else isn’t working at this point. But this does mean that when the full source code is released that it is very possible for Devs to get ICS up and running on this bad boy. Hopefully the fact that they’re already trying means that it will be in line early in getting ICS instead of being forgotten by Verizon and HTC.

Keep your fingers crossed folks!

Verizon Set to Re-Release Gingerbread Update for HTC Thunderbolt

Good news for us HTC Thunderbolt users, Verizon is set to re-release the Gingerbread update and they have updated the change-log on their support website. As you may remember Verizon pulled the Gingerbread update originally with no notification, although there was much speculation as to why. Hopefully this time they’ve fixed all the bugs and this roll-out will stick for everyone.

No official word on when the roll-out will start but we’ll keep you posted.

HTC Thunderbolt Gingerbread OTA Supposedly Suspended Due to Voicemail Bug

Oh Verizon why do you torture us so. Just a day after pushing out the OTA update of Gingerbread to the HTC Thunderbolt, Verizon has supposedly suspended distribution due to a bug found in the update. The Thunderbolt, Verizons first LTE handset has been skipped over for Gingerbread for quite some time so it was great to see it finally get the update it deserves but now that update has been removed so if you didn’t get it, you’re not going to until this is resolved.

Verizon Motorola XOOM 4G LTE Updates Available Thursday

Oh Happy Day Verizon lovers! Not only does Verizon push out the much awaiting Gingerbread update for the HTC Thunderbolt, but they also announce that starting tomorrow, 4G LTE updates for the Motorola XOOM will be available. As a XOOM owner I’m pretty happy about this especially since Motorola promised that the XOOM would be the first 4G LTE tablet on the market, (which the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tab took the crown for) so I bought the 4G ready version with hopes of blazing speed on my tablet.

Unfortunately Verizon doesn’t offer shared unlimited data plans so I’ll have to get a separate plan for my XOOM but a 4G tablet is definitely something worth ponying up a little extra dough for.

Instructions for the update are available on Verizons website.
