Samsung Galaxy S III Launching on All Five U.S. Carriers This Month

Samsung announced Sunday that the upcoming Galaxy S III Android Phone will launch on all Five major U.S. wireless carriers this month. This is a huge deal for Samsung and Android considering that phones as big as this have usually had a staggered release (Galaxy Nexus) or carrier specific launches, not a coordinated launch.

ICS Officially Available for Sprint Nexus S 4G

That’s right you loyal owners of the Nexus S 4G on Sprint, you can now officially download Ice Cream Sandwich to your phone! It’s taken some time and a few attempts to get this out the door by Sprint so hopefully they’ve ironed out all the little bugs that kept creeping in.

Let us know how the update goes for you if you’ve got a Nexus S, and of course let us know if it breaks your phone :)

HTC And Sprint Hosting Event On April 4th, One X Unveiling Approaching?

HTC And Sprint Hosting Event On April 4th, One X Unveiling Approaching?

HTC and Sprint are getting together once again for a special event on April 4th. At this point there’s no real hard evidence on what they’re planning on talking about but the popular thinking is that it will be the announcement of the HTC One X. The HTC One X made a lot of noise at MWC last month and has been making waves round the web with videos and specs. The One X is certainly a good-looking phone and will be the cool kid on the block once it’s launched (rumored to be on June 10th).

There is also the possibility that we might be in for a surprise from HTC and Sprint and they’ll introduce the One X as Sprints first LTE phone. Theirs always a chance right?

HTC Announces Ice Cream Sandwich Roll-Out Beginning March

0
HTC Announces Ice Cream Sandwich Roll-Out Beginning March

HTC has finally moved the needle forward with their plans for Ice Cream Sandwich updates to their phones, with the first wave starting to hit in March. HTC initially came out and said (like most manufacturers) that they were reviewing their line-up of devices and would make determinations of which handsets would be receiving Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Since this initial announcement there hasn’t been much movement, until today. HTC officially announced the first wave of devices that would be receiving the update to ICS (along with updated Sense) and that they will be receiving the update in March!

The List:

  • Rezound (Verizon)
  • Vivid (AT&T)
  • Amaze 4G (T-Mobile)
  • EVO 3D (Sprint
  • EVO Design 4G (Sprint)
  • Incredible S
  • Desire S
  • Desire HD

As you can see there is a pretty good group of devices there, unfortunately it’s not a lot of devices. HTC has been pushing out handsets at a very rapid rate (something they plan on correcting moving forward) so they can’t focus on all their handsets and have them all updated at the same time. Unfortunately that means a lot of people who have HTC phones, like Verizons first 4G phone the Thunderbolt, aren’t on the list for ICS updates. This doesn’t mean that they won’t be updated to ICS, it just means that in March you won’t be receiving it and you’ll h ave to wait for more information to come from HTC as to when you’ll be updated (if you’re going to be updated).

How do you feel about this? Do you think there should be more devices on this list? Do you think that you got ripped of?

AT&T's application to acquire T-Mobile US officially withdrawn

AT&T's application to acquire T-Mobile US officially withdrawn

Last week, AT&T announced its plan to withdraw their application from the FCC to take over T-Mobile US. Today, the FCC officially accepted the request to withdraw.

The merger that once looked like a slam dunk has faced some major hardships over the last few months with lawsuits filed by the Department of Justice and Sprint. Then, early last week, the FCC ordered an administrative hearing to take place in front of a federal judge. In addition, AT&T plans on taking a $4-billion pretax charge on their 4th quarter 2011 accounting sheet as a precaution if the deal does not go through – the $4-billion represents a default payment to T-Mobile’s parent company, Deutsche Telekom.

Given all the resistance, the withdrawal of the FCC application is part of AT&T’s plan to focus all their efforts on settling the antirust issues with the DOJ first instead of fighting battles on all fronts. Alongside granting the withdrawal, the FCC released a 109-page report containing its findings so far. All 109-pages can be found through the Engadget link below; however, Brad Molen of the site summarized it as follows:

In short, the FCC found that the cons of the deal outweighed the pros, and AT&T is likely to build out its LTE network regardless of what happens with the carrier’s buyout of T-Mobile. The report determined that the merger would create too many network inefficiencies and job losses, and whatever cost savings that would be generated by the deal wouldn’t be passed on to the customer.

In no way does this mean that AT&T is finished with its attempt to acquire T-Mobile; it is just the next chapter in the story. If they are able to settle the antitrust issues with the DOJ, you will see AT&T re-file with the FCC. Stayed tuned.

BestBuy Giving Away HTC Smartphone with the purchase of Modern Warfare 3

BestBuy Giving Away HTC Smartphone with the purchase of Modern Warfare 3

Well this is an interesting approach to increasing sales. BestBuy is giving away a new HTC phone with the purchase of Modern Warfare 3. Purchasers can chose from the Evo 4G for Sprint, the Incredible 2 for Verizon Wireless, or the Inspire 4G for AT&T. The only catch is that you have to sign up for a new 2 year contract, and with that you would think that you’d be able to pick your HTC smartphone but apparently BestBuy doesn’t think so.

This is an interesting strategy by BestBuy considering that the projected sales for MW3 are through the roof so you don’t need to incentivize purchasing it. BestBuy is hoping to leverage the high volume of sales of the game to getting people to be aware of the large mobile offering and getting users to sign up for contracts.

BestBuy has been in the smartphone business for almost 5 years and most shoppers are still unaware that you can purchase a phone for any network through them. Most consumers (roughly 70%) still go to carrier stores to purchase their cellphones. Maybe with the rampant sales of MW3 and this promotion BestBuy can make some inroads into new markets with cellphone sales. I personally think that most people who are purchasing MW3 from BestBuy are already well aware that BestBuy sells cellphones… Unless of course it’s a 12 year olds parent buying them a game that’s rated “M” for Mature for their child just to keep them quiet, in which case their awareness of BestBuy’s offerings are the least of concerns.

iPhone 4S Specs and Notes

iPhone 4S Specs and Notes

iPhone 4S Specs and Notes

Apple’s press event has wrapped up and the rumors are dispelled for now. Apple has officially announced the iPhone 4S which will be available for pre-order starting October 7th and available for purchase on October 14th. There are a lot of improvements under the hood here, but nothing groundbreaking outside of the camera. The main miss here is that there is no 4G in the device, which I see as a big detractor from this device especially with the coverage that Verizon has with their 4G network, but I guess they made that sacrifice in order to sustain battery life.

The full specs are below, but really, are you buying one? Are you disappointed? Where you expecting more? Let us know in the comments!

Full Spec list:

  • Dual-core A5 CPU, said to be “2x as fast at CPU tasks”
  • Dual-core graphics, up to “7x faster than the previous iPhone”
  • Battery life estimates: 8 hours talk time on 3G, 14 hours on 2G. 6 hours of browsing on 3G, 9 on Wi-Fi. 10 hours of video playback, 40 hours of music.
  • Theoretical download speeds of 14.4Mbps (as opposed to 7.2 on the iPhone 4.)
  • World Phone (meaning one model for release with a GSM & CDMA radio inside)
  • 8 megapixel camera (Photo resolution: 3264 x 2448). The camera also takes advantage of image processing on the A5 chip, enabling stuff like Face detection and 26% more accurate white balance.
  • 1080p video recording with real-time noise reduction and video stabilization
  • Voice-controlled personal assistant.
  • Available in black or white
  • Pricing 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, or 64GB for $399. This is the first time Apple has offered a 64GB iPhone.
  • Will be offered in the US by AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint
