HTC One Series – One X, One S, One V

HTC made it clear that this year they wanted to make fewer but better phones. In an attempt to reach that goal they announced the One Series. It will be a series of premium phones that offer excellent user experience by concentrating on what HTC believes makes a great phone: design, camera and sound. HTC has excelled in each of those categories before so it is not a question of if HTC can but if they can do it consistently. The first three phones of the One series will be the One X, One S, and One V. All three will run ICS,  have 25GB of Dropbox storage for two years and Beats Audio.

The One X will have a polycarbonate unibody in a 4.7-inch form factor with Corning Gorilla Glass and will run on a 1.5GHz NVIDA Tegra 3. Unfortunately, the LTE version will not have the quad-core Tegra 3 but  a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 instead. The One S will have the same S4 processor, a 4.3-inch Gorilla Glass screen, and will be 7.9-mm thin. Lastly, the One V will bring back the chin form factor of the HTC Legend and try to be a low-end phone with a premium experience. Availability is unknown right now but the One X will be on AT&T and the One S on T-Mobile.

Transformer Prime Outdated, Replaced by Transformer Prime?

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

The biggest fear when making a consumer electronic purchase is that the item will be outdated  fairly quickly; we’ve seen some examples of it here at CES 2012. The Asus’ Eee Pad Transformer Prime takes the cake though. The original was released on December 1st, 2011 and Asus has announced a new version of the Prime that will be released in the second quarter of 2012. The newer version will have a 1920 x 1200 Super IPS+ display, a 2 MP front-facing camera capable of HD video, a redesigned casing for better antenna performance for its Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, and run Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. Pricing is $600/32GB and $700/64GB. The older Prime had a 1280 x 800 Super IPS+ dispaly, 1.2 MP front-facing camera, was plagued with antenna issues, ran Honeycomb but is currently being upgraded to ICS, and sold for $500/32GB.

Asus did  announce a truly new tablet as well. The Eee Pad MeMO is a 7 inch tablet with a WXGA 1280 x 800 screen, a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 5 MP camera, and 1.2 MP front-facing camera. Asus states this tablet is made with an “emphasis on Entertainment, Media, and Light Productivity”. No pricing was given but it sounds like they are trying to compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire. Availability of the MeMO will also be in the second quarter of 2012.

Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G for T-Mobile

Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

Usually naming methods use a higher number or letter to represent newer devices. Well Samsung and T-Mobile are going against the grain with the Galaxy S Blaze 4G. Details are slim because the phone is not coming out until later this year. We do know it will have Super AMOLED display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and run Android. If that is an accurate representation of the device the capacitive buttons at the button lead us to believe it will run Gingerbread at first. The Blaze will not run on just any 4G network but on T-Mobile’s HSPA+42, which is arguably just as fast some LTE connections – as of now. Not much else to say except it sure does look pretty.

Two months after being launched, Verizon cuts the price of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to $99

Well that was fast wasn’t it? After only two months of being on the market the highly touted “Playstation Phone” the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play from Verizon has been cut from $199 all the way down to $99. For those of you not keeping score at home, the Xperia Play is the “first” Playstation certified Android phone. It’s sporting a single core 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, 528 mb or Ram and a 4″ screen. It runs on Verizons CDMA network so only 3G for gamers, but for $99 it’s not a bad option if you’re in the market for a new Android phone. Verizon is smart to drop the price of the phone down to $99 considering the At&t version is slated for release soon so anyone wanting a “Playstation Phone” will be more tempted to hit up Verizon. Also the $99 price point fits in the Verizon’s mid-tier device pricing and with the specs of the phone it is certainly in the middle tier.

So if you’re interested hit up your local Verizon retailer to jump on this deal.

Of course you could wait a month because as the summer is heating up so are rumors of upcoming super phones like the Galaxy SII and the Droid Bionic which are speculated to be released in August.

Qualcomm announces Game Pack for Snapdragon Android devices

In a recurring trend, Qualcomm has announced it’s upcoming game market for Android dubbed “Game Pack”. This follows in line with NVidia’s Tegra Zone and other rumored portals (HTC Play?). Chip makers are working hard to make sure that people know they can play high quality games on their devices. This creates a bit of an issue for developers because they might have to tweak their apps and games for each of these markets in order to get their games published.

Qualcomm has partnered with Glu, Gameloft, Namco Bandai, and more in order to bring high quality games to their devices. Qualcomm stated that Game Pack will have 100 titles available at launch and that the library will get larger over time. The 100 number alone dwarfs what NVidia has been able to accomplish with it’s Tegra Zone which currently only has 5 games available (after being launched in March).

While it’s nice to see chip makers taking the mobile gaming space seriously, the more market places that are created, the more segmentation can come into the market, which for Android is already a large problem. Hopefully developers wont shy away from these additional markets and they’ll be able to utilize the tools provided by chip makers to tailor their games to perform on specific system sets but these things do point out how much of a good thing Apple has going with iTunes and their AppStore making sure that a developer really only has to worry about building their game once and it working across a large audience.

We’ll have to see what happens, but as an owner of both a Tegra 2 devices and a Qualcomm device, I’m looking forward to see what both markets come up with.
