Nokia Lumia 610 – A Low-End WP7

Nokia Lumia 610 – A Low-End WP7

Nokia’s top WP7 phone, the Lumia 900, sells for $99 on contract with AT&T. In today’s market, that price is actually really good for a top of the line phone. However, a large portion of Nokia’s sales come from emerging markets where the phones aren’t subsidized by carriers and that $99 phone could cost several hundred dollars. Until now there was not a WP7 phone that would appeal to those markets. The Lumia 610 will sell for EUR 189 in the second quarter of this year.

The  610 runs a newer version of  Windows Phone 7 dubbed Tango, which lowers the minimum specification requirements. It has a 3.5-inch screen, 8GB of internal storage, 5MP camera, and runs on 256MB of memory. Even though the 610 is targeted towards a younger audience it will  help WP7 move towards the low-end market, which Nokia is used to dominating and Microsoft wants to enter.

Nokia Announces Non-WP7 Phone

Just when you thought Nokia was concentrating on Windows Phone 7 devices, they go ahead and announce the Nokia 808 PureView. The amazing thing about this phone is not the OS it is running but rather that it has a 41-MP camera. No that is not a typo it has a forty-one MP camera with full 1080p playback. If you are thinking “well the sensor is more important than the MP count”, you can rest assured because Nokia sensors are some of the best and they use Carl Zeiss optics. The 808 PureView is a 4 inch phone running the Nokia Belle OS.

HTC One Series – One X, One S, One V

HTC One Series – One X, One S, One V

HTC made it clear that this year they wanted to make fewer but better phones. In an attempt to reach that goal they announced the One Series. It will be a series of premium phones that offer excellent user experience by concentrating on what HTC believes makes a great phone: design, camera and sound. HTC has excelled in each of those categories before so it is not a question of if HTC can but if they can do it consistently. The first three phones of the One series will be the One X, One S, and One V. All three will run ICS,  have 25GB of Dropbox storage for two years and Beats Audio.

The One X will have a polycarbonate unibody in a 4.7-inch form factor with Corning Gorilla Glass and will run on a 1.5GHz NVIDA Tegra 3. Unfortunately, the LTE version will not have the quad-core Tegra 3 but  a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 instead. The One S will have the same S4 processor, a 4.3-inch Gorilla Glass screen, and will be 7.9-mm thin. Lastly, the One V will bring back the chin form factor of the HTC Legend and try to be a low-end phone with a premium experience. Availability is unknown right now but the One X will be on AT&T and the One S on T-Mobile.

A Tablet Sized Galaxy Note

A Tablet Sized Galaxy Note

You’ve probably seen or heard about the Samsung Galaxy Note. Either it is a large phone or a small tablet; no one really knows for sure. However, the newest addition to the Note line, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, can be called a tablet without any doubt. The Note 10.1 is a Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) with a 1.4GHz dual-core processor and S-pen capabilities. It is strange that the Tab 10.1, Tab 2 (10.1), and the Note 10.1 are all basically the same tablet except one runs an older OS, one has special software for a stylus, and one is caught in the middle. Are people this picky about their tablets? Hey at least you’ve forgotten there won’t be a Galaxy S III at MWC this year!

Samsung Unveils Galaxy Tab 2

Everyone was hoping for the Samsung Galaxy S III to be shown off at MWC this year. When Samsung made it clear that was not happening, you knew that whatever was announced would be met with a slight sense of disappointment; enter the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. The Tab 2 will come in a 7-inch model and a 10.1-inch model; both will be available in 3G and WiFi. Outside of the Galaxy Tab 2 running ICS, there do not seem to be any differences between it and the Galaxy Tab 7 Plus and Galaxy Tab 10.1, respectively. A global release starting in the UK will begin in March. I think its safe to say Samsung just Samsunged itself.

Sony Announces Xperia P and Xperia U

Fresh off officially dropping Ericsson from their name, Sony announced two new phones to their Xperia NXT series. The Xperia P and Xperia U are the little brothers to the Xperia S, which was announced at CES. Neither offer anything groundbreaking but the specs make it seem like both will be solid phones. Unfortunately, they will ship running Gingerbread with an upgrade to ICS at a later time.

The Xperia P is a 4-inch phone with a Reality Display and WhiteMagic display technology. Sony claims it offers “an ultra-bright and power efficient viewing experience”. Only time will tell how good the screen is in everyday use. Inside, the Xperia P has a 1GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of flash storage, a 8MP camera, and  NFC. The Xperia U is the low-end of the three. It has a 3.5-inch Reality Display with a 1GHz dual-core processor and 5MP camera.

Both phones will be available in the second quarter of 2012.

LG Shows Off Two New Phones and a Phoneblet

LG couldn’t contain itself before MWC 2012 pre-announcing many of its newest devices earlier in the week. Now that MWC is underway, LG has unveiled three of those devices to the public.

The Optimus 4X HD (pictured above) is LG first quad-core phone. It has a 1.5GHz NVIDA Tegra 3 chip, a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 IPS HD screen, an 8MP rear camera and 1.3 front-facing camera, 16GB of internal memory, and runs Android 4.0.

The Optimus 3D Max (pictured below) will the successor to the Optimus 3D. It will have a 3D a 4.3 inch screen with a Corning Gorilla Glass 2, an 1.2 GHz OMAP dual-core processor, 8GB of internal storage, and dual 5MP cameras. Unfortunately, the phone will run Gingerbread.

The Optimus Vu (pictured below) will be LG’s competitor to the Galaxy Note. Even though it will also be 5-inches, the Vu is shaped more like a tablet offering a 4:3 aspect ratio.  It will have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 32GB of storage, and an 8MP rear camera and 1.3MP front-facing camera. It will run Gingerbread out of the box but LG says an update to ICS “is already in the works”.

Motorola XOOM Pre-Order at BestBuy Moved to 2/20/11!

According to reports, and information provided to Droid-Life.com BestBuy has pushed back it’s pre-order date for the Motorola XOOM tablet. The date was originally speculated to be 2/17 but has since been pushed back to 2/20. Does this push back have anything to do with a software issue from Google? Does this have anything to do with the price confirmation from Sanjay Jha? It’s hard to say if it has any real impact at all considering the release date for the product has always been presumed to be 2/24 so in all reality it may have no effect on all of us who are thinking about jumping on board.

Are you thinking about picking up the XOOM Tablet on release day? Which version are you thinking about getting? the $799 3G/4G version or the $600 WiFi only version?

Verizon Wireless and Alcatel-Lucent show Live 4G LTE Multi-Continent Gaming

Verizon is really turning up the heat on 4G promotion. In Barcelona at MWC 2011 Verizon and Alcatel-Lucent are demoing LTE gaming with a player in Barcelona and player in the United States, in a moving vehicle!  Verizon has been touting the benefits of 4G since it’s initial launch in November of 2010, and now as more areas are being activated some of the benefits of 4G are becoming a reality (for limited users). Verizon has yet to launch a phone that can utilize it’s 4G network, to date they have only launched two USB modems so utilization of their 4G network is relatively minimal. We expect that to change this year with the upcoming release of the HTC Thunderbolt, and the planned releases of the LG Revolution and the Droid Bionic, as well as the Motorola XOOM which will start as 3G but be upgradeable to 4G.

Verizon is positioned to be the marketplace leader in 4G for the near future if they can continue their market roll-out and upgrades in a timely manner. Demonstrations like the one that they are currently doing in Barcelona just make users want access to their 4G network sooner.

Here’s hoping Verizon can ramp up to 4G faster and users can start reaping the benefits of all that 4G LTE has to offer.
