Sony Announces Xperia P and Xperia U

Fresh off officially dropping Ericsson from their name, Sony announced two new phones to their Xperia NXT series. The Xperia P and Xperia U are the little brothers to the Xperia S, which was announced at CES. Neither offer anything groundbreaking but the specs make it seem like both will be solid phones. Unfortunately, they will ship running Gingerbread with an upgrade to ICS at a later time.

The Xperia P is a 4-inch phone with a Reality Display and WhiteMagic display technology. Sony claims it offers “an ultra-bright and power efficient viewing experience”. Only time will tell how good the screen is in everyday use. Inside, the Xperia P has a 1GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of flash storage, a 8MP camera, and  NFC. The Xperia U is the low-end of the three. It has a 3.5-inch Reality Display with a 1GHz dual-core processor and 5MP camera.

Both phones will be available in the second quarter of 2012.

LG Shows Off Two New Phones and a Phoneblet

LG couldn’t contain itself before MWC 2012 pre-announcing many of its newest devices earlier in the week. Now that MWC is underway, LG has unveiled three of those devices to the public.

The Optimus 4X HD (pictured above) is LG first quad-core phone. It has a 1.5GHz NVIDA Tegra 3 chip, a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 IPS HD screen, an 8MP rear camera and 1.3 front-facing camera, 16GB of internal memory, and runs Android 4.0.

The Optimus 3D Max (pictured below) will the successor to the Optimus 3D. It will have a 3D a 4.3 inch screen with a Corning Gorilla Glass 2, an 1.2 GHz OMAP dual-core processor, 8GB of internal storage, and dual 5MP cameras. Unfortunately, the phone will run Gingerbread.

The Optimus Vu (pictured below) will be LG’s competitor to the Galaxy Note. Even though it will also be 5-inches, the Vu is shaped more like a tablet offering a 4:3 aspect ratio.  It will have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 32GB of storage, and an 8MP rear camera and 1.3MP front-facing camera. It will run Gingerbread out of the box but LG says an update to ICS “is already in the works”.

PSA: Motorola DROID 4 Now Available From Verizon

Quick Friday morning PSA, the Motorola DROID 4 is now available from Verizon Wireless for $199.99 on a new two-year contract ($549.99 full retail). For those of you keeping score at home, this is Motorolas 4G LTE qwerty packing big brother to the DROID RAZR. It sports a dual core 1.2 GHz processor, 4″ qHD display, Gorilla Glass and water-repellent nanocoating.

If you’re in line for an update this is a solid choice especially if you’re one of those folks that hasn’t made the complete jump to full touch screen phones. Motorola has already said that this device will be updated to ICS so the fact that it comes out of the box with Android 2.3.5 shouldn’t scare you away. The only thing hat I don’t like about this is that they decided to go with the 1785 mAH battery instead of the larger 3300 mAH batter from the DROID RAZR MAXX, but they do still say you’ll get 12.5 hours of use out of this battery.

Droid RAZR MAXX Now Available From Verizon Wireless

Droid RAZR MAXX Now Available From Verizon Wireless

Today Verizon launched the Droid RAZR MAXX by Motorola, which amazingly means, that Verizon launched a device on time! The RAZR MAXX is the enhanced version of the initial Droid RAZR increasing specifically the battery from 1780mAH to 3300mAH and promising 21.5 hours of talk time. The increased batter size only increases the thickness of the device from 7.1mm to 8.99mm making it still a ridiculously thin device. The phone carries all of the same benefits of the original Droid RAZR including Gorilla Glass, Kevlar backing, water-repellent nano-coating and 8MP camera. Oddly now the regular Droid RAZR is available in three color choices but the RAZR MAXX is only available in black.

Motorola and Verizon are also touting this as the first 4G LTE phone to last all day and night, which has been one of the major complaints of recent smart phones especially with 4G LTE.  The phone will run you $299.99 on a new 2 year contract, and has cause the beginning of the end of life cycle for the initial Droid RAZR.

Pantech Brings Budget Friendly Android Devices to AT&T

pantech burst

Pantech may not be a household name here in the US but it is intent on changing that by going after the unclaimed low-end smartphone market. They will be bringing two budget friendly 4G LTE devices to AT&T, the Pantech Burst (above) and Pantech Element (below). The Burst has a 4 inch Super AMOLED display, 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 5 MP camera, 2 MP front-facing camera, and 16GB of storage with a microSD slot for 32GB more. It will come in red or black on January 22nd for $49.99 with two-year contract. The Element is an 8 inch tablet with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of memory, and will be “waterproof against incidental exposure … when all ports are tightly closed”. That is great for spills but you’ll need to look elsewhere to get your Twitter fix while scuba diving. It will be $299.99 with a two-year contract on January 22nd. Both devices will ship with Gingerbread and there is no word on an ICS update.

AT&T is offering customers who buy both devices a special discount. You can get the Element for $249.99 and the Burst for free, with two-year contracts. This is a limited time offer.

Sony Xperia S

A phone without a carrier; the way it should be. Sony’s Xperia S is the first phone in their NXT series, which means next generation. Unfortunately, it will ship with the last generation Android OS, Gingerbread – Sony does say it will get upgraded to ICS in the second quarter of 2012. Besides running Gingerbread, Xperia S is another powerhouse from a company intent on changing the perception of its phones. It has a 4.3 inch 1280 x 720 Reality Display screen, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 32GB of storage, 12MP camera with Exmor, and NFC. The NFC allows the phone to work with Xperia SmartTags, which are coin shaped accessories that when tapped against the phone change the settings. You could have a SmartTag for the bedroom, office, and car to quickly change the phones settings for the environment. The Xperia S will run on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 HSPA 850/900/1900/2100 and will be available in the first quarter of 2012.

A Razr to the Maxx

Droid Razr Maxx

Verizon has made some changes to its Droid Razr by Motorola line-up. In addition to a choice of white or black, the Razr will now be available in purple. The color isn’t the only change, the price has been dropped from $299.99 to $199.99 with a two-year contract.

Smartphone users will never have enough battery life; thats where the Droid Razr Maxx by Motorola (pictured) comes in and tries to relieve that separation anxiety you feel when you leave your charger at home. The Razr Maxx has a 21-hour talk time on a single charge along with 32GB of memory. However, with the larger battery comes with a slightly larger form factor; 8.99mm thick to be exact. You may not be able to chop down street lights with this version but at least you’ll be able to test Verizon’s network 21-hours at a time. It will be $299.99 with a two-year contract.

Both phones run on Verizons 4G LTE network and will ship with Gingerbread but will be updated to ICS. The price drop and availability is “in the coming weeks”

Droid 4 VZW

When we heard the Droid 3 was given its end-of-life discontinuation, we knew the Droid 4 couldn’t be far off. There is no exact date but it’s one step closer. Verizon announced the Droid 4 by Motorola at CES. They are calling it the “thinnest and most powerful  4G LTE QWERTY smartphone”. That’s a lot of qualifiers but we’ll hold off judgement. The Droid 4 is .5 inches thick with a slide out 5-row QWERTY keyboard. It has a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB built-in memory, a 8MP camera with 1080p video capture, and a 4-inch qHD display. Also on board, you’ll find some Motorola proprietary additions such as MotoCast for streaming, Smart Actions, Mirror Mode, and  nanocoating for splash resistance. The phone ships with Gingerbread but will be upgraded to ICS. Availability is in “the coming weeks”
