Motorola Updates ICS Device List And Timing – Pisses More People Off

Today Motorola has updated their blog and ICS page with new devices that will be receiving updates to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). On top of the already known devices like the XOOM and XYBoards Motorola will also be updated the Droid Bionic, the RAZR (entire line up) the Droid 4, the Photon 4G, the Atrix 4G, the Atrix 2 and the Electrify. All of this is great news especially if you recently purchased a RAZR or one of the just released Droid 4’s.

The bad news is their update schedule is very vague and very distant. We’re talking Q3 2012 for phones like the Atrix and the Photon. Some of the reason behind the really long timelines is carrier specific, especially when it comes to Verizon. Motorola and Google haven’t been able to updated the XOOM 3G/4G which is a GED (Google experience device) because of Verizons testing and restrictions. The Droid family from the Bionic on is all more than capable of running ICS, Google and Motorola know this and are pushing the devices as such, but with Verizon in the loop testing and reviewing all the software updates users have to wait to get an official build.

Things like this force users to root their devices just to get the latest software on their devices, which just makes for angry users and angry carriers. Hopefully Motorola & Verizon can work something out to expedite these timelines, for all our sakes.

Motorola Droid 4 Appears In Verizon System

Motorola Droid 4 Appears In Verizon System

Well isn’t Motorola on a roll, first the Droid Bionic, then the Droid RAZR and now the Droid 4? This pace of device releases can’t be sustained and has got to be driving Verizon up a wall. We have a rumored device picture found by Droid-life, along with some interesting information. First and foremost this is a full qwerty device similar to the original Droid but it is obviously taking design queues from the Droid RAZR. Other than knowing the device will be 4G and have a screen size similar to the Droid RAZR not much is known at this point but with things going the way they are we’ll go out on a limb and say an 8MP camera, at least 1GB of RAM and a Dual-Core processor.

This does appear to be an early device build and may change with the upcoming Android 4.0 not needing physical buttons perhaps Motorola will see fit to remove the buttons from this device and make the screen a bit larger. It’s early yet but we’ll certainly keep you posted as we bet more information on this device.

Droid Bionic Finally Arrives – Tomorrow 9/8/11

Verizon Wireless and Motorola have been working long and hard on their monster device, the Droid Bionic. It was first announced over a year ago, it was leaked and teased and sent back to the drawing board at least once. Motorola and Verizon have kept us waiting for the LTE superphone that many have longed for since its first announcement, but finally that wait is over. Motorola and Verizon have confirmed that tomorrow, 9/8/11 the Droid Bionic will be available to the masses via Verizon stores.

Top Line about the Droid Bionic:

  • Android 2.3.4
  • Dual-Core 1ghz Processor
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 4.3″ qHD screen
  • 16 GB on board memory
  • 8 mp rear camera
  • Front facing camera
  • Wireless charging – out of the box
All in all this is a top line piece of equipment and the best Droid available to date, the only question is how long will it be at the top of the hill?

Droid Does updated to feature Droid Bionic

As Verizon does when they’re gearing up for a release of a new Droid device, they have updated their Droid Does page, and activated their Droid Landing twitter account to start stirring up the internet. This year Verizon has recruited bloggers to “unlock” content regarding this new device. Verizon has provided blogs with codes to crack, similar to their R2-D2 Droid 2 hunt, but without the device give-away aspect (which really made the R2-D2 hunt interesting and engaging).

Knowing the blogs they’ve given the codes to (Joystiq, Boing Boing, Android Central, etc) I’m sure it won’t be long before content starts getting unlocked and we get more and more info regarding the new Droid Bionic.

We’ll keep you posted!

Droid Bionic Deal at Cotsco ?

The folks over at Droidforums have gotten a lead on a potentially really good exclusive offer from Costco for buying a Droid Bionic. It appears as though they’ll still be pricing the Bionic at $299.99 like Verizon but they’ll provide you with a bonus Extra Batter, an Extra Charger, a Docking Station and a Navigation Dock.

If that’s all true that is one heck of a deal! Last tip from Droid Forum is that displays are supposedly set to arrive on September 8th and the phone going on sale shortly after.

We’ll keep you posted if we find any other deals or additional details!

Google to Acquire Motorola Mobility

Google to Acquire Motorola Mobility

Hot on the heels of lasts weeks interesting statements from Motorola regarding monetizing it’s IP properties and receiving royalties from other manufacturers utilizing it’s technologies for Android, Motorola has announced that it’s mobile arm, Motorola Mobility is being acquired by Google. This is huge news in the world of mobile for a huge range of reasons. Google has been fighting with everyone for patents on technology and they’ve been struggling to keep Android open and free for manufacturers. Google has also said that they are intent on defending companies that use it’s Android operating system on their devices when other companies sue them for using their patents. Motorola has one of the largest patent stables out there and has been a strong partner to Google since the launch of the initial Droid for Verizon (which virtually saved Motorola’s mobile business). Now with Google acquiring Motorola Mobility, not only do they have a large stable of patents to protect itself and it’s partner companies with but they also have a strong device manufacturing arm which could change the future of Android on phones and tablets.

It’s very early into the story on this but if everything goes through this could be some of the biggest news in years when it comes to the mobile ecosystem.
