Could Google and Asus Release A $199 Tegra 3 Tablet At Google I/O?

Could Google and Asus Release A $199 Tegra 3 Tablet At Google I/O?

Rumors have been flying left and right about Google releasing a Nexus tablet for months now, and as Google I/O approaches they are starting to heat up again. NVidia has come out recently with their plan for tablets with Tegra 3 processors into the market for $199. Asus has been making some of the best Tegra 3 tablets on the market for a while now so it would make sense that Asus and NVidia would bring lower cost tablets into the market and with Google rumored to be bringing more Nexus devices into the market place why not partner with two of the best to bring in a tablet?

Now this is all rumor at this point but it is matching up nicely with news from NVidia, Asus and Google. Since Google I/O is only a month we wont have to wait to long to find out if these rumors pan out, and hopefully they are true, because a $199 Android tablet would certainly put a huge push of Android tablets on to the market.

We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

ASUS Outs Transformer Pad 300 Series

ASUS Outs Transformer Pad 300 Series

ASUS was not willing to let Samsung to be the only company to announce new tablets that aren’t actually new. At MWC, they announced changes to the Transformer line of tablets beginning with the name. From now on, their tablets will not be known as EEE Pads but instead Transformer Pads. Two additions will be made to the line-up including a new Transformer Pad Infinity Series, which will have a 1920 x 1200 Full HD Super IPS+ display. The 4G LTE model will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4  while the WiFi model will run on a NVIDA Tegra 3. For the lower end, ASUS will be adding the Transformer Pad 300 Series. The only technical difference between the 300 Series and the newly re-named Transformer Pad Prime seems to be the screen quality has been downgraded to a 1200 x 800 IPS+. For anyone keeping score at home, these will be the third and forth iterations of the Transformer Pad Prime since its launch in December of last year. No pricing or availability has been announced.

Transformer Prime Outdated, Replaced by Transformer Prime?

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

The biggest fear when making a consumer electronic purchase is that the item will be outdated  fairly quickly; we’ve seen some examples of it here at CES 2012. The Asus’ Eee Pad Transformer Prime takes the cake though. The original was released on December 1st, 2011 and Asus has announced a new version of the Prime that will be released in the second quarter of 2012. The newer version will have a 1920 x 1200 Super IPS+ display, a 2 MP front-facing camera capable of HD video, a redesigned casing for better antenna performance for its Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, and run Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. Pricing is $600/32GB and $700/64GB. The older Prime had a 1280 x 800 Super IPS+ dispaly, 1.2 MP front-facing camera, was plagued with antenna issues, ran Honeycomb but is currently being upgraded to ICS, and sold for $500/32GB.

Asus did  announce a truly new tablet as well. The Eee Pad MeMO is a 7 inch tablet with a WXGA 1280 x 800 screen, a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 5 MP camera, and 1.2 MP front-facing camera. Asus states this tablet is made with an “emphasis on Entertainment, Media, and Light Productivity”. No pricing was given but it sounds like they are trying to compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire. Availability of the MeMO will also be in the second quarter of 2012.

Kal-El is here

Kal-El is here

Tegra 3

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No it’s actually the Tegra 3. The long awaited quad-core chip from Nvidia, coded named Kal-El, is finally here. It will be know simply as the Tegra 3. It is the first quad-core chip on the market and it doesn’t even have 4 cores; it has five. The fifth core is what Nvidia is calling a “companion” core that will be utilized for low power tasks. While doing things like listening to music, playing back video and background updates only the companion core will be active. However, when more power is required for things such as browsing the web, multitasking, or gaming the fifth core shuts down the and beastly quad-core takes over. While Nvidia’s press release did not mention clock speed, The Verge is reporting the companion core has a maximum of 500Mhz; in single-core mode it will get up to 1.4Ghz and 1.3Ghz  when in dual-core or quad-core mode. Nvidia says it will offer 61% lower power consumption over the Tegra 2 with 12 hour battery life for HD video playback. Given that it can support 1080p video playback at a crazy 40Mbps, we will have to wait and see about that 12 hour battery. The Tegra 3 provides 3x the graphics performance of the Tegra 2 due to the 12-core GeForce GPU. 15 Tegra 3 games under development for the Tegra Zone – a market place inside the Android market that offer games optimized for Tegra devices. The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime will be the first Tegra 3 device.

Asus Confirms Transformer Prime Nov 9th Launch with Quad-Core Processor

Asus has confirmed the follow-up to their successful Transformer tablet, the Transformer Prime will launch on November 9th. This will be the first tablet to feature NVidia’s Quad-Core Kal-El processor, which we’ve covered before. Asus also confirmed that the Transformer Prime will launch with Honeycomb 3.2 but will be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich after launch.

Asus has been definitely made its mark in the tablet arena, and they continue to push the curve with specifications. It’s going to be a hard market to compete in this coming quarter, with the likes of the Amazon Kindle Fire coming out. It will be interesting to see how the Kal-El processor performs and what it can do to Android, specifically Ice Cream Sandwich because it will be able to utilize the multiple cores.

This holiday season is going to be a big one for Android, from phones, to tablets, to the newest version of Android. I hope everyone has been saving their money through out the year for all of these great devices!
