Nokia Lumia 610 – A Low-End WP7

0
Nokia Lumia 610 – A Low-End WP7

Nokia’s top WP7 phone, the Lumia 900, sells for $99 on contract with AT&T. In today’s market, that price is actually really good for a top of the line phone. However, a large portion of Nokia’s sales come from emerging markets where the phones aren’t subsidized by carriers and that $99 phone could cost several hundred dollars. Until now there was not a WP7 phone that would appeal to those markets. The Lumia 610 will sell for EUR 189 in the second quarter of this year.

The  610 runs a newer version of  Windows Phone 7 dubbed Tango, which lowers the minimum specification requirements. It has a 3.5-inch screen, 8GB of internal storage, 5MP camera, and runs on 256MB of memory. Even though the 610 is targeted towards a younger audience it will  help WP7 move towards the low-end market, which Nokia is used to dominating and Microsoft wants to enter.

Nokia Lumia 900 Up For Pre-Order From The Microsoft Store For $25

That’s right the Nokia Lumia 900, that was recently released and still doesn’t have a confirmed launch  price, can now be pre-ordered via a Microsoft store. The LTE beast is is slated to launch on AT&T in march and will compete directly with the HTC Titan II. Unfortunately you need to live near a Microsoft store (which there aren’t many of) in order to take advantage of this deal. Luckily this is one step closer to the actual launch of the device!

Nokia Lumia 900 Available in The UK Soon?

Nokia Lumia 900 Available in The UK Soon?

Nokia introduced the beauty of a Windows Phone 7 device at CES called the Lumia 900, unfortunately Nokia did not comment on release date or pricing at the time, they also didn’t mention international availability. Well the folks at Carphone Warehouse have a coming soon page on their website that lends some credibility to the idea that Europe will be getting their own version of the Lumia 900 as well. Pocket-lint is pointing out that their sources are saying an announcement could be on the way at MWC next month. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nokia release the Lumia 900 across multiple carriers and regions, it only makes sense for smart phone makers to release their high-end devices across multiple carriers and regions, while building a few mid range phones for individual areas and carriers. Nokia has gone all in with Windows Phone 7 and it is starting to pay off, and if the rest of their line follows in the trend of the first three Lumia’s we could be in for some great phones from Nokia with a great Mobile OS.

Nokia Lumia 900 WP7 Device Coming to AT&T on March 18th??

So you saw Nokias CES announcement of the Lumia 900, and you were upset that no one said when it was coming, well fret no more! Nokia may have let the ever important release date slip out into the public. Paul Thurrott and Mary Jo Foley, reported earlier on Nokias developer newsletter and the fact that it contains a March date for the device. Mary Jo Foley specifically calls out that the device will be available on March 18th.

Granted this could be a typo, rampant speculation, or totally false documents, but for now lets run with it and see what happens shall we?

Nokia Lumia 900 to AT&T

Nokia Lumia 900

It won’t be the first Nokia Lumia phone to come to the US that honor goes to the Lumia 710, but the announcement of the Nokia Lumia 900 for AT&T is another step in the right direction for Nokia and Microsoft as they try to do something neither has been able to do alone, gain significant market share in US. The Lumia 900 looks similar to it’s Lumia 800 and N9 brethren. It has a 4.3 inch Clear Black AMOLED display, 1.4GHz single-core processor, 8MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, front-facing camera, and will run on AT&T’s 4G LTE network. The Lumia 900 will be pre-loaded with Nokia Drive, a voice turn-by-turn navigation system, and some other apps that will come first to Nokia devices. They include the ESPN sports hub, CNN app for WP, the Univision app, and over 20 EA games. It will come in cyan or matte black; pricing hasn’t been announced yet and availability will be “in the coming months” – sounds familiar.

HTC Titan II

AT&T’s LTE network may be nascent but that isn’t stopping them from giving those data speed demon customers options. HTC unveiled the Titan II, a WP7 Mango phone, that will run on the aforementioned LTE network. There isn’t a complete spec sheet yet but it looks like the Titan II will be very similar to the original Titan except that the former has a 16MP camera and a larger battery. Both have a 1.5GHz single-core Snapdragon processor and a Super LCD display. Remember when you bought a phone and its successor wasn’t announced in 4 months? The Titan II will be available “in the coming months”.

Activision Launches Call Of Duty Elite App – Finally – Updated

Activision Blizzard took to its Facebook account today to announce its release of the much awaited Call of Duty Elite app. Unfortunately they have only cause more anger than relief, as they are only release the App for iOS on Tuesday 1/10/12. They have not mentioned the release of the app for any other devices or operating systems at this point in time.

Activision Blizzard has been getting a lot of heat for the handling of Call of Duty Elite since it’s launch and one of the selling points was the mobile app, which 3 months after launch still isn’t available. We’ll be reaching out to Activision to see if they can provide an update on additional devices / OS support but for now, folks with iPhones rejoice, everyone else, we’re used to being second class citizens.

Rumor: Microsoft Working on Xbox Live Service for Android and iOS

0

Ok lets file this under massive rumor, there is no confirmation, release, leak, or any real information of any sort to support the idea that Microsoft is in the process of bringing Xbox Live Services to Android and iOS. The internet is buzzing about this idea due to a recent job posting from Microsoft, looking for a software development engineer to work with the Xbox LIVE team and contains the following:

“to bring the latest and greatest gaming and entertainment experience to mobile platforms including Windows Phone, iOS and other mobile platforms… Experience of Windows Phone, iOS or Android development is a big plus.”

Now don’t get all excited about this at all. Microsoft release its companion app for Xbox Live when Windows Phone 7 launched, and has subsequently released the app for iPhone. The app allows you to manage different aspects of your Xbox Live account, friends, status, and features. For Windows Phone it also allows you to play certain specific games on your mobile device. At this point only Android (and Blackberry) do not have Xbox Live companion apps, so this job posting could very well be to aid in the development and support of the companion app, and even possibly bring the companion app to Android. This is the most likely scenario and purpose of this job posting so do not, repeat DO NOT get excited about this.

That said it is very possible that Microsoft would want to bring its Xbox Live services to more connected devices than just the Windows Phone platform. With the market penetration of both iOS and Android, Microsoft certainly can not ignore their place in the mobile ecosystem. Microsoft has also been looking at ways to enhance its Live platform by integrating more features and functionality, so bringing one if it’s corner-stone services to more users is a very good business strategy. We certainly want to see this happen, and it could possibly happen with iOS devices in the near future. Android devices however would be a bit farther off, I can’t see Microsoft spending the amount of time and resources required to develop an Android app / platform that would be cross compliant with the different hardware and software configurations that are abound in the Android ecosystem. This is Android’s greatest feature and weakness and this is another example of where it could certainly hinder development for the platform.

As always we’ll keep our eyes and ears open for more information, but again, it’s just a rumor.
