Today Zynga officially purchased OMGPOP and ownership of the extremely addictive Draw Something game. Clearly Zynga was not thrilled with another company stealing its thunder in the overly addictive game app market.

Draw Something has taken off lately and is growing in popularity both with iOS and Android users. Like most simple social games it will certainly sputter in popularity, just as Words With Friends and Hanging With Friends has. At this point in time Draw something is certainly getting all the headlines and this news is going to spur usage just to see what all the coverage is about. It’s too early to tell if this was a good purchase for Zynga, but picking up the team that developed a game that stole it’s thunder certainly isn’t bad for business.

OMGPOP’s CEO Dan Porter, who will remain on as a VP with Zynga, told fans that the game will only change for the better.

“The game will stay true to you and what you love, and it’s my solemn vow that the magic of Draw Something will not change,” he said. “With the added resources we now have, and the deep gaming experience we can draw from, we can’t wait to continue to surprise our users. If you’re a fan, a player of ours, I can’t wait to show you what’s in store – it’s going to be drawsome.”
