EA came out last night and announced it will be launching three new expansion packs for Battlefield 3, in an attempt to continue to gain traction in the war against Modern Warfare 3. The first expansion pack this year will be Battlefield 3: Close Quarters, which EA demoed last night.
Close Quarters, is slated to debut in June on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC. In the opposite fashion of the Modern Warfare series, the Battlefield expansion packs will release on Playstation 3, one week prior to Xbox 360 and PC. The expansion will include new maps, weapons, achievements, and vehicles. The Close Quarters expansion is going to focus primarily around infantry fighting. The maps will have more destructible environments, 10 more weapons, and focus specifically on short range-combat.
EA will also be introducing a new service that allows players to “rent” a server from their console. This will allow players to host their own custom servers to set up games exactly how they want to play, similarly to how PC users can host their own matches with their own rules and configurations.
EA also let out a few details regarding the third expansion titled Battlefield 3: Armor King which will be launching later this year. Armor King will emphasize vehicle combat with large open maps where players will need to rely on the use of tanks and planes. The fourth expansion, Battlefield 3: End Game was also hinted to but no details were released as of yet.
